James A. Bibb, PhD is the Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center, holds the Champs Lyons Endowed Chair for General Surgery, and is a member of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Bibb received his undergraduate degree from Murray State University and his Ph.D. in Cellular and Developmental Biology at the State Univ. of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Bibb’s postdoctoral training was conducted in the Laboratory on Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience at the Rockefeller Univ. under the direction of Paul Greengard. His work on the regulation of dopamine neurotransmission was cited in the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2000. Dr. Bibb has 20 years of experience studying intracellular signal transduction. His research has implicated the dysregulation of the protein kinase, Cdk5 as an important cause of neuroendocrine cancer. Currently, his lab is using novel animal models of NE cancer that they have developed to identify tumorigenic mechanisms as diagnostic biomarkers and conduct preclinical testing of new anticancer drugs. Dr. Bibb is a member of the American Cancer Society Consortium on MEN2.
