Janice Pasieka, MD, FRCSC, FACS

Dr. Janice L. Pasieka is a Clinical Professor of Surgery and Oncology at the University of Calgary, specializing in surgical diseases of the adrenal, parathyroid, and thyroid glands, as well as neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. After graduating from the University of Western Medical School, she completed her General Surgery residency at the University of Calgary. She then pursued advanced training as an R. Samuel McLaughlin Fellow, spending a year in research at the University of Calgary, followed by an Endocrine Surgical Fellowship at the University of Michigan under Dr. Norman Thompson, and additional training at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, with Professor Bertil Hamberger.
Upon returning to Calgary, Dr. Pasieka dedicated her practice solely to endocrine surgery. At the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, she was instrumental in establishing a multidisciplinary clinic for neuroendocrine tumors and the Multidisciplinary Hereditary Endocrine Clinic. She also developed Canada’s first AAES-accredited Endocrine Surgery Fellowship program.
Dr. Pasieka has held significant leadership positions, including Secretary-Treasurer and President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES), becoming the first Canadian and only the second woman to serve as President. In 2021, she was honored with the prestigious Oliver Cope Meritorious Achievement Award from the AAES in recognition of her substantial contributions to the field. She also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) and, in August 2024, assumed the role of President.
A recognized leader in her field, Dr. Pasieka was named one of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network in 2007 and was a Canadian James IV Traveling Surgical Fellow in 2006. She has been Governor of the American College of Surgeons and Associate Editor of the World Journal of Surgery. In 2024, Dr Pasieka was given the Medal for Distinguished Service from the Alberta Medical Association and recently the recipient of the Dr. Peter B. R. Allen Lifetime Achievement Award in Health.
Dr. Pasieka has authored over 190 peer-reviewed publications, edited three endocrine surgery textbooks, and contributed more than 28 book chapters. Beyond her professional achievements, she enjoys running, mountain biking, cycling, hiking, and snowshoeing with her dog, Kocher.
