A Note from Dr. James Howe, Chair of NANETS
Dear NANETS Colleagues and Friends,
It gives me great pleasure to write, having recently returned from a very successful NANETS Annual Symposium. Over the course of three days, more than 450 physicians, researchers and allied health care providers from throughout North America and around the world convened in Seattle, Washington to learn about NET disease. Attendees took part in over 20 sessions covering areas from NET patient diagnosis and treatment to NET research and supportive care.
As NANETS' new Chair, I am excited for what the future holds for our organization and the strides we are making in the fight against neuroendocrine tumors. This past symposium set a number of records: 110 abstract posters were presented from 11 countries. Fifteen oral abstract presentations were made including three from ENETS (European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society) Young Investigators.
Additional highlights of the symposium included:
- The presentation of NANETS’ Lifetime Achievement Award to Robert Jensen, MD. Dr. Jensen is the chief of the Cell Biology Section, Digestive Disease Branch, Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Jensen is the sixth recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was first presented in 2009.
- Presentation of a record four NANETS research grants: the Clinical Investigator Scholarship, Basic/Translational Science Investigator Award, Theragnostics Investigator Grant and Young Investigator Grant
NANETS 2018 also saw the changing of the guard. Our society benefited greatly under the leadership of outgoing Chair David Metz, MD (Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania). David's leadership over the past two years guided NANETS through a time of strategy and change. He continues to serve as NANETS' Chair Emeritus, along with officers: Vice Chair Emily Bergsland, MD (University of California San Francisco School of Medicine); Secretary, Jonathan Strosberg, MD (Moffitt Cancer Center); and Treasurer, Pamela Kunz, MD (Stanford Universty Medical Center). I look forward to collaborating with our expanded Executive Committee and new board.
Sincerely,
James Howe, MD
Chair
